Bio

I translate from Swedish to English for major art museums, universities, publishers, and architects. I specialize in art and architecture but work in many other fields as well. I have been translating and editing museum catalogs, doctoral theses, journal articles, architecture and design books, and websites for more than 25 years. I have a Bachelor's degree in English from the US, a Master of Architecture from Sweden, and have worked as a construction worker in Sweden and the US for 4 years and as an architect and planner in both countries for nearly 20 years. I have translated everything for Wingårdh Architects, Chalmers University School of Architecture, and Moderna Museet Malmö for several years.

“I have had the pleasure of hiring John Krause as a translator or editor of Swedish texts about architecture on many occasions. The result has always been excellent. Krause offers the rare combination of mastering both Swedish and English fluently while also knowing the professional terminology in the field of architecture, which is unusual. I have also had only the best experience of having translations delivered by him on time, and he is able to transform even challenging plays on words from Swedish into the English equivalent. It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend John Krause as a translator and editor.”

“Having worked with John Krause on a great many book projects, design presentations, exhibitions, and articles, I want to enthusiastically recommend him as a translator from Swedish to English. Krause has not only delivered correctly, quickly, and reliably, he has understood the importance of a translator interpreting the author’s intentions, and he finds opportunities to give the English translation qualities that are more in line with those intentions than a literal rendering of the sentence would be. In his translation of my book about Gert Wingårdh’s architecture for Birkhäuser Verlag’s 2001 monograph, he interpreted my title diagonal attityd as oblique assault. That added an intrinsic value to the English version of the book.”
